Tributes flow for former News Corp editor

FRANK Devine, the New Zealand-born journalist and editor, died on Friday at age 77.

Tributes from colleagues have flooded in for the former editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, the New York Post and The Australian.

The Australian, which Mr Devine continued to contribute to in retirement, published comments from News Corporation and News Limited identities Rupert Murdoch, John Hartigan, Paul Kelly and Chris Mitchell over the weekend in an obituary by Peter Coleman.

Mr Devine started in newspapers at the Marlborough Express as a 17-year-old, before moving to Perth and taking a job at The West Australian. He went on to edit the Australian and New Zealand editions of Reader’s Digest, before moving to the US to take control of the American edition of that publication.

Rupert Murdoch then hired him as editor of the Chicago paper, the first three News Corp titles that came under his leadership.

Mr Devine is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and his daughters Miranda, Alexandra and Rosalind.
