Herald Sun chief grabs Cairns editor

HERALD & Weekly Times editor-in-chief Phil Gardner has announced the latest addition to the Herald Sun print and online newsroom by appointing Mark Alexander to the newly-created position of Head of News.

Alexander is  editor of the Cairns Post. His new appointment follows the departure of Herald Sun chief of staff Nick Papps to the role of deputy editor of the Sunday Mail in Adelaide.

Gardner said the Alexander appointment “replaced and expands the chief of staff role and reflects the changing demands of the news business, when decisions have to be made instantly across all platforms.

“In his new role, Alexander will be the key figure in the Herald Sun’s new integrated newsroom,” Gardner said. “Reporting to editor Simon Pristel and deputy editor Jill Baker, he will drive the daily news agenda, ensuring the right resources are used to deliver the best coverage across print and online.”

Alexander’s newspaper career began as a cadet with Western District Newspapers in Camperdown in 1992. He worked on regional newspapers in Warrnambool and Hamilton and in suburban and metropolitan papers in Perth before joining the Cairns Post as a sub-editor in 1998.

In 2003 he moved to the Sunday Mail in Brisbane where he was chief of staff before returning to Cairns in 2006 as editor of the Post. During his time in Cairns, the Post has been highly commended in the regional Newspaper of the Year and Campaign of the Year categories of the News Awards, and its website won Online Newspaper of the Year (Regional) at the 2008 PANPA awards.

He takes up his new role at the Herald Sun on February 23.

In other moves recently announced by Gardner, Cameron Tandy has been appointed picture editor of the Sunday Herald Sun, Manuela Cifra deputy picture editor of the Herald Sun and Ian Baker assistant picture editor of the Herald Sun.

These moves follow several other new appointments at the Herald Sun, including Jill Baker as deputy, Matthew Kitchin as sports editor and Claire Sutherland as managing editor (features). As well, Matthew Pinkney has been appointed editor, heraldsun.com.au and Jon Zabiegala managing editor for the art and design department, which has moved to a seven-day roster.
