Newcastle editor gets Canberra paper

THE fast and furious pace of editor appointments in the region continued today with Fairfax Media announcing new editors for the Canberra Times and the Newcastle Herald.

Australia’s national capital newspaper will welcome Rod Quinn, currently editor of the Newcastle Herald. He will replace Peter Fray, who took the helm of the Sydney Morning Herald last month and is expected to announce his own editorial management team within days.

PANPA understands Mr Quinn has edited the Newcastle paper since 2003.

His role will be filled by the internal appoitnments of Roger Brock, who was deputy editor. James Joyce fills Mr Brock’s current role.

The move to seek internal candidates only for these positions underscores the pledge by the new Fairfax Media chief executive, Brian McCarthy, that his company would more aggressively tap the skills that already existed within his organisation.
