Smiles for Iles: 09’s first new editor

THE Sunraysia Daily is the first major Australian newspaper to change its editor in 2009, with Kieran Iles taking over from Lyall Corless.

Mr Corless resigned from the role and left the Mildura publication on January 2.

Mr Iles joins the independent paper from Star News Group in Melbourne, where he was editor of the north-western division, responsible for nine titles. He was previously editor of Mt Gambier’s Border Watch.

He said he was relishing the opportunity to “get back into the regional atmosphere”.

“Being part of a community is easier as a rural editor,” he said. “You get to meet more people and become a leader in the community. In the city you tend to be more confined to your desk.”

Mr Iles, Melbourne-born, said a planned brief stint at Mt Gambier turned into a prolonged stay of nine years as he progressed from journalist to sports editor, to chief-of-staff and eventually editor.

“I really enjoyed representing the town,” he said. “Mildura is around the same size as Mt Gambier so I will be using that experience and adopting a fairly similar approach.

“Water is obviously a big news issue in regional Victoria so I’m trying to get my head around that at the moment.”

One of Mr Iles’ challenges in 2009 will be to retain the Daily’s PANPA Newspaper of the Year crown in the category for dailies with up to 20,000 circulation.
