Dutch govt consider financial help for papers

THE Dutch Government is considering giving financial aid to its country’s newspapers in a bid to preserve the battling industry, the Epoch Times reported.

Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Ronald Plasterk announced a commission will be undertaken to explore the industry’s challenges, and examine how newspapers can become more profitable through “innovation projects”. Mr Plasterk said up to 8 million euro will be made available for investment, according to the report.

The chief editor of NRC Handelsblad, a Netherlands broadsheet, reacted negatively to the concept of government influence in newspapers. Birgit Donker wrote in an editorial: “We don’t want to become dependent on the government. The only thing we want is a free-market which is really free.”
