APN picks up north NZ newspaper

APN New Zealand has acquired The Northland Age, a 104-year-old newspaper that serves the Kaitaia region in the country’s far north.

The twice-weekly publication, which had been independent of major media groups until now, will change hands on January 1.

The newspaper’s owner, Keith Wagener, also announced he will retire from publishing on December 31 after 20 years in the industry.

Rick Neville, from APN Regional Newspapers, said: “Our intention is to maintain The Northland Age as a separate newspaper, serving its readers and advertisers as it has always done but benefiting from access to the additional resources a large publishing group can offer.”

Mr Neville said current Age staff would be retained.
