A picture book tells 100 years

FAIRFAX Books launched the Century of Pictures: 100 Years of Herald Photography special publication at a function attended by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The book celebrates the milestone reached this year by the Sydney Morning Herald, which published its first photograph in 1908.

Former Herald photographer and picture editor, Mike Bowers, led a team of staff compiling the book on a journey back through time to via the paper’s estimated 16 million slides and negatives at an archive in Alexandria, in Sydney’s south.

Mr Bowers, who was the creator of the concept, presented the book at the launch event at the new Berkelouw Books store in Newtown. He left Fairfax earlier this year as part of the company’s job-cutting program.

Mr Bowers also spoke about the importance of press freedom for photographers as well as reporters, citing the current disagreement between media and Cricket Australia. He commended Mr Rudd for his work in the press freedom area.
