Oakley ends Herald era

ALAN Oakley has stepped down from his position as editor of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

Mr Oakley started in the role in 2005 when he took over from PANPA President, Robert Whitehead.

An announcement from Fairfax Media’s chief executive and publisher, NSW and ACT Metropolitan Publishing, Lloyd Whish-Wilson, said Mr Oakley had been offered a senior strategic position in the company.

Deputy editor Michael Millett will take on the editing role while the company interviews a shortlist of internal candidates, Mr Whish-Wilson said.
