Female sports pioneer rises in Oz ranks

TWO key appointments have been made in Australian journalism – Louise Evans becomes managing editor of The Australian and Mark Forbes takes on the deputy editor’s role at The Sunday Age.

Ms Evans was the first female sports editor of The Australian, taking that position in 2001. The Australian said in a statement she was also the first female to be employed on the sports desk of the Sydney Morning Herald. She has worked on The Gold Coast Bulletin, Canberra Times and also for AAP, where she was a correspondent in London and then in China.

Mr Forbes is also well travelled. He was a Walkley finalist this year for his work as Indonesia correspondent for The Age. He is a former state political roundsman for The Sunday Age, and has held positions at Fairfax as an investigative reporter and a defence correspondent.
