Dom Post cleared of contempt of court charges

The editor of The Dominion Post, a Fairfax publication in New Zealand, has been cleared of contempt of court charges based on articles that quoted leaked bugged conversations between terror suspects.

Tim Pankhurst and the Fairfax Media company faced charges based on the possibility the articles could influence jurors in the trials of the terror suspects. The bugged conversations were not allowed to be used as evidence in the case.

But High Court judges ruled that by the time of the trials, which would be at least a year away, the influence of The Dominion Post articles would have almost certainly dimished, clearing Mr Pankhurst and Fairfax.

The judges said the articles breached suppression orders and broke a law banning publication of what the bugs found, but police only warned the newspaper for those offences.
