TODAY appoints young editor lured from TV

SINGAPORE’S second newspaper, TODAY, has appointed Walter Fernandez as editor.

Aged 37, Mr Fernandez joined TODAY as managing editor in late 2006 after quitting Channel NewsAsia as a senior executive. TODAY is part of the MediaCorp.

“A newspaper editor, whom I respect tremendously, once said that readers must pay for quality journalism. I believe passionately in quality journalism — accurate and analytical, but in this day and age, I don’t believe readers ought to be forced to pay for it,” he told the TODAY website.

He began his career in journalism at Singapore’s leading newspaper, the Straits Times, rising to be senior political correspondent. He also worked as part of a team compiling the memories of the legendary Singaporean leader, Lee Kuan Yew, according to media reports.
